Tool Wrap is used for heat treating parts or tooling. Wrapping the parts or tooling with Type 304 or 321 stainless steel during heat treating protects the surface of the parts or tooling from corrosion, scaling, or oxidation. Type 304 is a multipurpose 18-8 stainless steel that can be used in lower temperature tool wrap applications. Exposure to temperatures in the 800 to 1500° (427 to 816°C) may cause precipitation of chromium carbides in grain boundaries when using Type 304. Type 321 is a stabilized stainless steel (addition of Titanium) offering excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C). Type 321 may be better suited for tool wrap applications exceeding 1500° ( 816°C).
